Finding the Magic in the Motivation
So, can I be real for a sec? I don’t know about you, but there seems to be a wave of “motivational posts” going around the web that frankly just do not motivate me. Some examples include:
- — Another woman’s six pack abs
- — A scene of someone working on a remote island
- — A photograph of a Birkin bag with a quote about “getting money”
Now before you think I’m nuts, allow me to break it down for you.
All of those things are pretty pictures. They stimulate your brain for a second into thinking, “I want that!” But, if that’s all we’re seeing, it’s short lived momentum.
I want to know why you have those six pack abs. And I want to know your struggle getting there. I want to read about how you sat on the couch in a flood of tears and felt worthless before you felt strong. I want to read about how you battled with your own inner demons and came out on the other side stronger, healthier, and better for it.
I want to know everything about what working on that remote island actually means to you. I want to read about how you felt trapped in your cubicle for 7 years before you finally got the balls to quit that shitty job so you could work on that island. I want to hear about how your boss broke you down one too many times until you finally got the courage to get your shit together and walk away. I want to read about your emotional breakdowns along the way and how you pulled through them.
I want to know why you decided to invest in that Birkin bag and just how you did it. What did you sacrifice to make that purchase? How did you get to a place of wealth consciousnesses where you actually felt okay with spending 10 grand on a purse? Were you scared shitless when you handed over your credit card to pay for it? If so, how did you handle that?
See what I’m getting at here? Motivation goes far beyond a pretty picture or a quote. Motivation is what drives us at the core. Motivation is in our struggle as well as our triumph.
So think about it for today: what will really motivate you to make a positive change in your life? Are you sick of feeling embarrassed to wear a tank top? Are you sick of sitting home crying when you’re getting dressed for work in the morning because you feel so fucking miserable in your own skin so you must make a healthy change? Are you so mind numbingly bored at your day job that its affecting every area of your life (right down to your sex life, even)? Are you feeling so underwhelmed that its causing you to drink more, eat more, and spend more money you don’t have? Are your feelings of worthlessness becoming so overly abundant that you are consumed by your fear?
What is REALLY happening inside? Write it down today in all its grit and honesty. Read it. Read it out loud. Read it to your best friend.
And then get to work.
