Crystals 101: How to Get Your Energetic Rocks Off
I get so many questions and comments about my use of crystals. Total disclaimer before we go any further: I am not an expert on the subject of healing crystals, nor do I intend to ever become one. I am just passionately curious about all things mystical and magical, so I’m here to share what I’ve learned and hopefully answer a few questions around working with these beautifully powerful rocks.
My interest in crystals was first piqued when I was about 14 years old and I discovered a new-age, Asian boutique near my home in Brooklyn. I would go in with my best friend after school and ogle over all of the crystal necklaces strung in the front of the store. I had no idea what they meant, nor did I care, I just knew I wanted to wear them around my neck. They were cool and curious, kind of witchy and goth-like. Just my 90’s style.
I kind of forgot about those necklaces for a while, until a few years ago when I started exploring my own spirituality. I noticed a lot of teachers incorporated the use of crystals into their practices, so I started educating myself. I visited local crystal shops, like Namaste Bookshop in New York City, and read articles on the various energetic and healing properties of different crystals. I had no idea what I was getting into, I just bought the ones that I thought were pretty and then researched them. Interestingly enough, the crystals I was naturally drawn to were the ones I needed most in my life. They say that happens.
Crystals have been used throughout history for healing. They vibrate at different levels based on their color and composition. They are not satanic, or sacrilegious. They are gorgeous, naturally occurring gifts from the Universe that have amazing effects on the body. They can focus, shift, or amplify energy, and help draw negative energy from us.
My crystal collection today involves the following rocks: amethyst, clear quartz, aurora quartz, aqua aura quartz, rose quartz, and others that to be totally honest, I don’t even remember the names of (I told you, I am no guru). I work with them in a variety of ways, but mainly I keep them in a cluster, on my desk, close to me all day long. I sometimes take my amethyst and put it next to my candle on the ledge of my bath tub when I take a relaxing detox bath. I travel with a few of my smaller, tumbled (rounded) crystals. I always keep a couple tucked neatly into the inner pocket of my Chanel. Some people sleep with them under their pillow. From my understanding, there is no wrong way to use crystals. They each have high vibrational properties that help you feel more energized and aligned.
Here’s some of my collection that I keep on my desk:
A few popular crystals that I love and their meanings are as follows:
Clear quartz – this is usually clear or milky white in color, and is known to amplify energy. People use clear quartz to pump up the energy of their other crystals, and use them often in meditation.
Rose quartz – this crystal is all about love. Self-love, love for others, love for everything, basically. I know a few women who wear a rose quartz bracelet or necklace and swear it helps them attract romance. Whether or not that’s true, it’s such a pretty shade, who wouldn’t want to deck themselves out in pink stones!?
Amethyst – this is kind of what I call a “starter crystal.” It’s easy to find and it has a ton of benefits. It’s known to help balance and align your energy and has mega healing properties. I have a huge rock of it (photo above) that I keep in my home. I also have a smaller tumbled amethyst that I carry around in Coco.
Aurora quartz – Aside from being stunningly gorgeous (hello, white with a luminescent, rainbow tone!), aurora quartz is known to be one of the higher energetic crystals. It’s said to bring on feelings of deep bliss and happiness, and help us connect with our heart center. Some people say that when you hold this crystal to your heart, you’ll feel an instant charge of joy. I’m into it.
If you’ve been curious about crystals, I say just go for it. Buy a few either in a local shop or online (Etsy has a lot of shops you can order them from). Try them out. Play with them. Throw them in your purse. Mediate with them. Float them in your champagne (okay, totally joking on that one). But most importantly: enjoy the experience. One of the best pieces of advice I have received and make sure I always give is that life is meant to be enjoyed. You simply can’t fuck something up if you’re having fun with it. So go get your crystals and get your energetic rocks off, babe. And let me know it goes.
